This NYT editorial brings to light new legislation voted by the GOP-controlled House that seeks to expand the terror mandate against any "associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States." The vague language of the law would allow it to be applied to groups who had nothing to do with 9/11 and could also be applied domestically. Such military actions and indefinite detentions (and torture) of 'belligerents' would take place in secret and without the approval of Congress. This is bad news and we've got to resist the hyperbole and false patriotism that its proponents use to sell it to us.

We should all admit that privacy is dead, our rights to due process have been removed and that corporations rule our government over the people. Once we admit the problem, like a drug addict, perhaps we'll take some action to correct it.
ReplyDeleteI would be great if your blog posts included actions that could be taken by individuals whether it's calling a senator, join a group discussion, something beyond reading about it.
Hi. I've included action items in some posts and lists of Activism Causes and websites on the margins of the blog, buts perhaps that is not enough. Much of what I sign comes to me through email from various groups I've supported over the years. I could encourage people to support these groups more aggressively. I could also post a link to Care2Causes, Public Citizen, PAN, OCA, Food & Water Watch and other groups with a heading for Taking Action. What do you suggest?
