A study in Canada has found the presence of Bt toxin, widely used in GM crops, in human blood for the first time. Industry has claimed that the toxins would be broken down in the human gut but no studies have ever been performed by regulators to test the safety of GM food products in the US. Recount ends, gives Prosser the win in Supreme Court race

I've been following the Wisconsin Supreme Court race and recount and am saddened by this report concluding that conservative Justice David Prosser has won a new 10-year term. This is a bitter disappointment and may have severe consequences as legal challenges to anti-labor and environment regulations work their way to the Supreme Court. The Court now has a clear 5-4 conservative majority and I'm not sure what recourse citizens in Wisconsin will have to challenge their rulings or change its composition. With the US Supreme Court firmly established as a champion of corporate 'individual' rights, we are continuing to lose the legal battle for social justice in America.

Connecting the Dots: Novel GMO-Based Bug Threatens U.S. Food Supplies

A Professor Emeritus and senior plant pathologist from Purdue University, Dr. Don Huber, warns that a new organism spawned by glyphosate (the primary ingredient of Roundup) has infected GM corn and soy feed and poses a grave threat to livestock and agriculture in the US. But, the government has turned the other cheek to the scientific data and approved two new glyphosate (Roundup) dependent crops, GM Alfalfa and GM Sugar Beets, despite the clear evidence that glyphosate has led to a 20% infertility rate in cattle and dairy herds, and an abortion rate of 45% in some animals. I'm very happy to see this story on HuffPost and hope it gets more mainstream attention as it is a critical issue for all of us. Not only was the Patriot Act extended by Obama, but it's powers were expanded with little debate or press coverage by his administration. The fundamental legal foundation of our democracy has been put at risk due to the over-zealous anti-terrorism laws enacted in response to 9/11. FDA agents launch covert ops against D.C.-area raw-milk buying club

The FDA has engaged in a number actions against natural food and raw food providers and coops around the country. I will be posting additional stories on this issue as I find it odd, and alarming, that such investigative resources, including undercover operations and armed raids, should be mounted by the agency against such innocuous threats as raw food coops. Regulations for offshore oil drilling are lax and pertain only to operators, not the legions of contractors who actually operate the wells. This became apparent in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe in the Gulf, and needs to be remedied with new regulations and oversight. This is an interesting piece that focusses on the less salacious aspects of the DSK arrest in NYC by pointing out that it may be because of union job protection that the accuser was able to stand up and go public with rape charges against a powerful international figure. It makes a great point, that without the New York Hotel Trades Council union, the woman could have had her job taken away just for reporting the assault. Naturally, this would have been a strong dis-incentive to reporting the attack.

Are Petitions An Effective Way of Remedying Important Issues?

I have recently been wondering about the potential effectiveness of on-line petitions, and had hoped that massive responses to such petitions could, in fact, influence policies in a meaningful way. Many of you may already be familiar with this report from Snopes on this issue, but it was news to me and I post a link to it here. The bottom line, apparently, is that online petitions are largely ineffective beyond reflecting a subset of public opinion, and are easily dismissed by policymakers and manipulated by computer techies to distort the authenticity of 'signers.' Many petitions, furthermore, are never delivered to the intended politician or group after signatures are collected. A much more effective activity for those who truly want to demonstrate their position on an issue is to write letters as a constituent to elected officials.

The Governor of New Hampshire, John Lynch (D), vetoed the Republican-controlled legislature's anti-union bill to make the state "right-to-work,"pointing out that states with such laws tend to have workers with a lower standard of living who more often have to do without health insurance. Japanese Officials Ignored or Concealed Dangers

The Times is having a good day as I've felt compelled to post several pieces from the paper today. This in-depth report on the nuclear industry's history of ignoring and downplaying safety issues at nuclear power plants in Japan, particularly risks associated with earthquake vulnerabilities, reveals that regulators and government there were too closely aligned with TEPCO to effectively perform their duties to protect public health. We have precisely the same problems here in the US and yet our officials are pushing for new nuclear power plant construction despite the fallout from the disaster in Japan. Do not forget that all nuclear plants in this country are subsidized 100% with taxpayer money because the private sector will not invest without government support, because of the massive risks and cost overruns involved in nuclear energy. Based on this story and the history of NRC negligence in regulating nuclear power in America, we simply cannot trust the governments assertions that these plants are safe. We need to stand up and say "No!" to more nuclear power in this country, and insist that the hundreds of spent nuclear fuels rods and pools that currently exist, as well as the aging plants still in service, are responsibly managed and regulated.

A Conflict Without End

This NYT editorial brings to light new legislation voted by the GOP-controlled House that seeks to expand the terror mandate against any "associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States." The vague language of the law would allow it to be applied to groups who had nothing to do with 9/11 and could also be applied domestically. Such military actions and indefinite detentions (and torture) of 'belligerents' would take place in secret and without the approval of Congress. This is bad news and we've got to resist the hyperbole and false patriotism that its proponents use to sell it to us.

Mobile phones soon required to receive, display White House propaganda messages

Apparently, in 2012, cell phones under Verizon and ATT will automatically send alert messages from the White House to private mobile phones. This should be troubling for Americans who are familiar with the unreliability of news that emanates from our government. Just think back to the buildup for war in Iraq and all of the misinformation put out into the public discourse by the Bush Administration during that time. Natural News extrapolates how this precedent can be extended to the Internet as well, to a time when your Google request could be automatically routed to the White House page even if you're not trying to get there. A useful bit of information in the story points out that you can bypass such maneuvering if you know the IP address of the sites you are trying to visit. While the article riffs on many worst-case scenarios of information and Internet access abuse, the speculation is realistic, in my view, and points to the importance of Net Neutrality laws and other legal protections that will be critical in maintaining the openness of the Internet in the future.

Greece has stopped growing a form of GM corn that was approved for the EU. Since 1995, a former pesticide salesman has been collecting traditional seed that goes back generations to maintain the plant and crop diversity that is key to Greece's agricultural heritage. Monsanto and other biotechs continue to mount legal pressure on the EU to allow more GM varieties but, so far, the EU has refused these pressures and stated that there is no benefit in allowing these crops.
